Simple idea for local law enforcement and emergency personnel to not only understand, but also endear themselves to, us car nuts - Run the cruisers and vehicles in autocross, rallycross, and track day events .

Seriously, how brilliant of an idea is this?!?!?!?! First of all, it gives both groups a better understanding of the other. Not all cops are dickheads and not all car lovers love blowing fireballs out of a ratty 240sx at 3 am on the local main street. In fact, both stereotypes are the exception, not the rule. Plus it would not only add some numbers to smaller events with another few cars and drivers, it also serves as an emergency response presence. Pretty sure event organizers would like to know that, should things go wrong, you have emergency staff who can be there as soon as the incident happens. A few cops in a police SUV might not be an ambulance or fire truck but it's a hell of a lot better than none at all. Plus they can call for backup faster. AND it will likely make it easier to rent spaces for us to use. Pretty sure a property owner would love to hear "We have full cooperation of authorities and police will be present" when it comes to renting out land for an event.

So this is a small plea to the emergency and law enforcement agencies out there - THROW DOWN ON THE FIELDS OF BATTLE!!!!!!!!!

I think it's a great idea apart from the details. They would have to run vehicles not owned by the municipality, and they would have to actually care about public perception. The best way to improve PR is to stop running a chickenshit extortion ring against the everyday commuter just trying to get to work to pay for the very taxes that pay for the speed traps. Sorry that was a bit of a rant.

LEO here - i can already hear John Q Public crying: "our tax dollars are going to pay for racing waah waah waah."

Now, seize a Vette from a drug dealer and slap some "this used to belong to a drug dealer" stickers all over it, I'm game

That might help a little, but I don't think that the habitual dickhead offenders who drive recklessly are the type who go to the track and autocross days.

There are places where cops drag race as a way to promote the local drag strips and safety versus being idiots on a public road, so I don't see why they couldn't do this.
